The world's largest airport terminal planned for China

The world's largest airport terminal planned for China

Have pity for passengers attempting a last-minute dash to their gate at the forthcoming Beijing International Airport’s terminal 1. Airport developers ADPI have collaborated with Zaha Hadid to design what will be the world’s largest airport terminal. Their plans show a 7.5 million square foot space that will process 45 million passengers a year – that’s almost 125,000 people a day.
Renderings of the terminal show a vast central hub from which six curved spokes extend. Zaha Hadid Architects say this radial design will greatly reduce passenger transfer time between different parts of the airport, and despite the building’s immense size the firm says it will retain a “human scale”.
Multiple public spaces will be found within the largely column-free building and a grand central courtyard will stand at its epicentre. The structure’s façade will curve to a distance of three miles, and capacity here could be further expanded to enable the terminal to ultimately accommodate 72 million passengers each year.
Due for completion in 2018, the terminal will be the busiest section of the new airport, also known as Daxing Airport, currently under construction and located about 30 miles from the city centre. It will be the Chinese capital’s second international airport; completed in advance of the Olympic Games, the Foster + Partners-designed Beijing Capital International Airport was the world’s largest airport building when it opened in 2008. Coupled with the airport’s Ground Transportation Centre, it occupies a total floor area of approximately 14,000,000 square feet.
It was initially predicted that the airport would accommodate 50 million passengers per annum by 2020. Airports Council International states that over 86 million passengers used the airport in 2014. It is the second busiest airport in the world, after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport which was used by 96 million passengers last year. Heathrow was third busiest, with over 73 million passengers.
Britain’s largest airport terminal is London’s Heathrow Terminal 5. It opened in 2008 and occupies a space of approximately 3.8 million square feet, almost half that of the forthcoming Beijing New Airport Terminal Building’s 7.5 million square feet. It serves British Airways customers exclusively and last year it processed 31.6 million passengers, versus the newcomer’s projected 45 million users, who will be passengers of a number of different airlines.
